RM 4 Bil Sukuk Issuance Proof Of Investors’ Confidence In Sarawak’s Economy: Premier

KUCHING, Tues: The successful issuance of RM4 billion worth of sukuk funding by bankers to fund the Sarawak Petrochemical (Sarawak Petchem) methanol plant in Tg Kidurong, Bintulu is a testimony of investors’ confidence in the economy of Sarawak as a whole, Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg said yesterday in Bintulu.

The Premier said this in his speech to mark the delivery of the plant modules and their installation and the symbolic presenting of investment funding by the bankers.

Sarawak’s political stability and the forward looking GPS government were two important factors that had gained the investors’ trust, he pointed out.

The Sarawak-owned methanol project using offshore natural gas as feedstock is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2024.

Once completed, the plant will be the first plant in Sarawak to produce methanol with an annual capacity of 1.75 million metric tonnes.

Sarawak Petchem in a press statement said the Sukuk offer had received strong feedback from investors with an over-subscription of more than twice the initial target size with the final issuance of RM4 billion.

Earlier, the Premier officiated at the earth-breaking ceremony of Petronas’ additional gas distribution facility that will supply gas to the plant to produce methanol.

Earlier, the Chairman of Petchem, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Abdul Aziz Hussain also spoke.
